Swim-A-Thon Fundraiser - Saturday May 7, 2011
Hello Parents,
Our biggest fund raiser of the of the year is approaching fast and it is time to start gearing up the kids and our fund raiser for this event! Small clubs like ours rely on the extra funds that we raise each year through events like this one. Over the past 3 years we have been able to raise over $10 000 per year in this event and this year I want to aim even higher and try to reach $12 000!
Here's how it works. All swimmers in squads 1-5 are expected to participate on the actual swim-a-thon day and in the fundraising. Swimmers will be raising funds either on a flat rate or on a per length basis. They will swim either 200 lengths or for 2 hours, whichever comes first. Although there is a minimum amount per swimmer required (see the club parent Handbook) we don't want families to stop there. Swimming is about goal setting, aiming high and reaching beyond what we think we are able to do - and we want to help develop that ethic in the personal, academic, and athletic lives of every swimmer in our club. So set a personal goal that you want to aim for and work towards it.
Over the past few years we have developed a highly effective strategy to help families and swimmers achieve these goals. In the past swimmers have gone door to door to try and gather up sponsors for events like this but a 3 years ago we changed over to a letter writing campaign. Bigger swim clubs have been employing this strategy very effectively. Some of the clubs in Seattle have raised over $60 000 for their swim-a-thon events through this type of strategy. Ever since we made that switch we have been able to ramp up our donations and have achieved great things for the club! So how does it work?
On Saturday February 19, 2011 the club hosted a pancake breakfast and letter writing campaign for swimmers and their parents to help get things started. At that breakfast we provided families with the official swim-a-thon packages and instructions as well as letters to be signed by the swimmers to be sent out to people that you know who are involved in your child's life who might be interested in sponsoring them. Weren't there? No worries, you can contact me at for an official package to get you started and you can download a sample letter to send out at the link below. We want you to think as widely as possible on this. Everyone you can think of from grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends of the family, neighbors, teachers, dentists, physicians, friends from work - you name it - anyone who has a connection with you or your swimmer should be on your list. Of course there is also the old fashioned way of going door to door which may be an additional way that you want to utilize as well. We encourage families to keep working on the fund raising side right up to the actual swim-a-thon day. Don't just stop at your required amount - aim high! Why? First there is there is the feeling of success in a job well done. Second there is the sense of accomplishment in the cooperative effort of building your "Sharks Club". Finally there is a brand new Kona NuNu Mountain bike up for grabs in a draw right after the Swim-a-thon on Saturday May 7th (see below for full details on how to maximize your chances).
On Saturday May 7, 2011 we will have our actual swim-a-thon event at the Aquatic Centre. We will need one parent per child to count your swimmers laps and of course as many other family members as you want to bring to cheer your child on.
So...mark you calendars and get on the fund raising trail and maybe you will be hitting the dirt trails after the Swim-a-thon with your new Kona Mountain Bike!!

Fresh Wild Seafood Fundraiser!!
Sharks Families;
Kimberly and I sell top quality wild seafood, mostly caught by us, in the Comox Valley. We have approached the Sharks to help fundraise for the club and to try and expand our consumer base. What we are proposing is to donate $1.50 for every pound of seafood sold, back to the club. Out of every $1.50 donated to the club, $1.05 will go towards your fundraising commitment. So start to think of who you know who likes seafood and you can submit their orders under your name and collect the credits towards your fundraising account. We will be accepting orders up to March 11 with a delivery date no later than March 18. All going well we will also be trying for another order date of April 15 with a delivery date no later than April 21. Cheques will be made out to the Comox Valley Aquatic Club, and can be given either to Kimberly or myself if we are at the pool or by putting the order forms and cheques into the SHARKS boxes located at each pools reception desk. We are flexible on our delivery dates and after confirmation from the club of payment will deliver each members order.
