Welcome to our new Head Coach - Kris Bell
Dear Members of the Comox Valley Aquatic Club,
As promised for release June 1st, we are providing you with information about the 2013-2014 head coach for the Sharks.
We would like to introduce you to Kris Bell (photo attached).
Kris was born in Toronto, Ontario. After swimming with the York Swim Club for 9 years, he moved to Timmins to continue training for one more season. During his last three years of competitive swimming, Kris was proud to attend the Canadian National Championships. He then began his coaching career in Timmins with the Timmins Marlins Swim Club. He had many successes with his swimmers in the Marlins, and was also the founder of the Timmins Marlins Masters Swim Club. After two years, Kris moved back to Toronto and began coaching with the York Swim Club. He began his tenure with the Toronto club by coaching the novice group, and then quickly progressed to Head Age Group Coach. During his stay with York, he coached from entry level swimmers to Provincial Championship medalists. In 2002, he moved to Etobicoke, Ontario as a junior coach. He advanced to the Elite group for the 2003-4 season and then became the coach of the Junior National group and the Head Age Group Coach for two seasons. Most recently, he was the advanced age group coach with the Etobicoke Swim Club. Kris has been described to us by his references as knowledgeable, enthusiastic, energetic, fair, motivational, and a good communicator.
Kris will be moving to the Comox Valley this summer with his wife, Kathleen, and two children. We look forward to working with him and hope to have an early registration/get-together in August. Stay tuned for more information on an exciting new year!

And kodos to the timers for getting the kids in the right lanes and heats: Genny, Pia, Todd, Gail, Angela, Steve, Mike, Garry, Michelle, Willie, Thanks to Mike, Todd, Garry, Rob and Steve for moving the heavy equipment between pools. And last but not least thank you to our senior swimmesr: Gabby for sitting at the chalk board all afternoon and Ben, Juliana and Michael for doing Stroke and Turn. Special thanks to Kim, from Campbell River, our Referee and Leon from Victoria as our starter.
Thanks to all the parents on deck for respecting that the space was reseved for the swimmers, coaches and officials. It was hard to judge what 100+ swimmers would look like on deck with the hottub and sauna. It all worked.

Fundraising with FunScript!!
Each year we work towards keeping our swim fees as low as possible through a variety of means including fund raising. One of the simple and easy ways to do this is through FunScript. They are a Canadian company that produces and sells "gift" cards to help clubs like ours, an average of 3% of your total purchases can be earned towards your fundraising commitment. Cards can be purchased for most of your everyday items such as groceries, gas, and many other household needs from many retailers in the Valley. Just think - if you already buy your groceries from Superstore why not get a credit towards your fundraising committment. Why not get your familiy and friends to do the same and get them to contribute towards your credit?

Congrats to our Latest Age-Group National Swimmers!
Small Contingent Big Results
Eight Comox Valley Aquatic Club Sharks travelled to Victoria for the Island Pacific Cup last weekend. The competition was tough with new Olympic Head Coach Randy Bennet swimming his "Academy" swimmers in the meet. "The swimmers were really inspired to be swimming with Olympic level swimmers such as Julia Wilkinson or Blake Worsley. It pushed them to bring on their "A" game." commented Sharks Head Coach Albert Burgund.
Three swimmers qualified for the Age Group Nationals which will be held in Calgary next summer: Brooke
Lamoureux (800 free,200 butterfly,400 IM), Emma Neufeld (50 back) and Ben Neufeld(200 back). The others did some impressive swimming too. Julianna Bartemucci , Gabrielle Wolfe and Mario Venegas all swam 100% best times and managed to make some new "AAA" (provincial standard) qualifying times in the process! The medal count ran up impressively - Brooke lead the pack with 7 gold and 1 silver while Ben followed up with 3 gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze. Congratulations to all the swimmers on a job well done.
The Sharks would like to thank the community and their sponsors for all their support. For complete results and information on the club please visit our

New Test Set Contest, Nov 2011
Hello folks.Every Wednesday from now I will be running a test set - please down-load the attached sheets (explanation and first test set results) and go over them with your swimmer NOW PLEASE - Thank you!
I will require some assistance - timing and recording - so if you can spare some time (about 1.25 hours) I would appreciate it. Perhaps we can set up a schedule - I need about 4-5 volunteers each Wednesday - get back to me () and I can set up the schedule - give me your preferred date/time.Thanx-a-million!
The swimmers get points for being "the best at execution" - how they did compared to a formula NOT by how fast they were (although that's good too) I am trying to teach their bodies HOW to execute a specific strategy.

What equipment do I need?
Now you may not need equipment like this but swimming does requiring a few items beyond the obvious swim suit. Coach Albert has put together a list of the things that each squad should have. Please make sure your swimmer has these and brings them to practice each week. Most of these items can be purchased at the swim shop at the pool If you have any questions about this please take the time to talk with Coach Albert. You can download the list below.
